Description

Philodendron Gigas is a popular aroid that stands out with its velvety leaves that can get giant in size! The oval leaves emerge in a copper colour with light green veins and turn into a luscious, dark green as they mature.

Philodendron Gigas was first described in 1997 after being discovered in Panama. It is similar to Philodendron Melanochrysum, which has more heart-shaped, but equally velvet and dark green leaves. Since this plant is a climber, it will require a pole to thrive and grow bigger leaves.

Philodendron Gigas is not a demanding plant. Place the plant in a spot with medium indirect sunlight and let the soil almost dry out between watering. Grow your Philodendron in a well draining potting mix. Alternatively, a soil-less medium like sphagnum moss or perlite/vermiculite will work fine.

If you are a Philodendron enthusiast, here are a few more interesting species: Philodendron Squamiferum, Philodendron Pink Princess, Philodendron Hederaceum Lemon Lime.

Initial Care (After receiving the plant)

Leave the plant in its nursery pot for a few days. if the soil is looking dry and leaves are drooping, water the plant and keep it in a shady location for a day. If the plant arrived with some yellow leaves, do not worry as this is common and caused by transit. You can pluck the leaves and give it some time to recover. Don’t forget to fertilize the plant after 14 days!

Size

This plant is around 30 cm tall and comes in a 17 cm plastic nursery pot.

Philodendron Care Tips

Light

Philodendrons thrive in medium to bright indirect light, but will tolerate darker spots as well.

Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix, such as our Aroid Potting Mix, ideally containing some coco coir, bark and perlite. You can also grow Philodendrons in soil-less mixes like sphagnum moss and perlite or hydroponics.

Water

Philodendrons like their soil to dry between waterings. Water when the top 3cm of soil are totally dry to the touch.

Humidity

Most Philodendron, especially the Erubesecens varieties, will thrive in average humidity. However, some of the more tropical and velvety species will require higher humidity to survive.

Toxicity

All Philodendron are toxic to humans and animals if ingested.
