Description

Gymnocalycium mihanovichii f. variegata is a rare beauty of a cactus with red and yellow variegation! Due to its unique variegation, each one of these cacti is one of a kind and a true delight to every collector!

Gymnocalycium mihanovichii f. variegata, also commonly known as ‘moon cactus’, is a dwarf cactus. It only reaches only about five centimeters in size, so it is perfect for small spots that need a highly decorative and living pop of colour! Added bonus: It can produce flowers, which do not have a scent, but look extra cute.

Gymnocalycium mihanovichii f. variegata is really easy to take care of and a good option for beginners. During the growing season, water this cactus as soon as the soil is fully dry. It will also appreciate a very bright, sunny spot to grow in.

Like all cacti, Gymnocalycium mihanovichii f. variegata goes dormant during winter, so do not water it during this time. Also keep in a bright, cool position by a window. It can tolerate temperatures down to around 10 degrees Celsius. With that, it is a great plant for your outside space most of the year, but will need to be brought inside during winter.

Gymnocalycium variegata has spikes which can cause some irritation. Therefore, avoid touching the plant not only for its own sake, but also for your own precious fingers.

Fun fact: The genus name Gymnocalycium is Greek for ‘naked calyx’, because the plant’s flower buds have no hair or spines.

Cactus Care Tips

Light

Strong light is essential for healthy cacti. Make sure to give them as much light as possible when growing it inside. If you want to bring your cactus outside during the warmer months, make sure to acclimate it to the stronger light step by step or it might scorch.

Soil

fast-draining cacti mix ideally containing sand

Temperatures

Desert cacti love warm temperatures during the summer and cooler temperatures in winter. You can grow your cactus outside during the growing season to give it that extra bit of sun and warmth, which will result in faster growth. However, make sure to bring it back inside before the first freezing nights or it might get frost damage.

Water

When your cactus is actively growing during the growing season, water whenever the soil is dry to the touch. Make sure to water thoroughly when you do. During the winter rest period, only water very rarely and if the plant begins to shrivel. The most common mistake with cacti is overwatering, which will cause rot either at the base of or its growing tips.

Toxicity

Not all cacti are toxic for humans and animals when ingested, but some are. Either way, make sure your pets do not get too close to them due to their prickly spines! Care is needed when handling cacti to prevent injuries.
