Description

Philodendron Squamiferum is a unique Aroid boasting prominent, fuzzy red petionles and oak leaf-shaped foliage with multiple lobes. It has the ‘hairiest’ petioles of all Philodendron, it’s most recognisable feature.

Philodendron Squamiferum is a very easy-going and rewarding houseplant for both beginners and expert plant parents! That’s because this houseplant is very adaptive to different conditions. It will also forgive you if you forget to water it sometimes, since likes to dry out between waterings. This Aroid will thrive best in medium to bright indirect sunlight and moderate humidity.

Make sure you plant your Philodendron Squamiferum in an airy potting mix! We recommend Aroid Potting Mix, which we developed specifically for this plant family. If you decide to make a potting mix yourself, it should consist of bark, perlite, and peat moss.

Fun fact: In the Greek language ‘Philo’ means ‘love’ and ‘Dendron’ means ‘tree hugger’, describing the natural disposition of almost all Philodendrons to climb up trees.

Initial Care (After receiving the plant)

Leave the plant in its nursery pot for a few days. if the soil is looking dry and leaves are drooping, water the plant and keep it in a shady location for a day. If the plant arrived with some yellow leaves, do not worry as this is common and caused by transit. You can pluck the leaves and give it some time to recover. Don’t forget to fertilize the plant after 14 days!

Size

Philodendron Care Tips

Light

Philodendrons thrive in medium to bright indirect light, but will tolerate darker spots as well.

Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix, such as our Aroid Potting Mix, ideally containing some coco coir, bark and perlite. You can also grow Philodendrons in soil-less mixes like sphagnum moss and perlite or hydroponics.

Water

Philodendrons like their soil to dry between waterings. Water when the top 3cm of soil are totally dry to the touch.

Humidity

Most Philodendron, especially the Erubesecens varieties, will thrive in average humidity. However, some of the more tropical and velvety species will require higher humidity to survive.

Toxicity

All Philodendron are toxic to humans and animals if ingested.
