Description
Begonia Maculata Wightii is known for its dramatic angel wing-shaped leaves that are covered with silvery-white polka dots, which look almost unreal as if they were painted onto the deep olive-green foliage. This leaf pattern is where the plant gets its common name ‘Polka Dot Begonia’ from. The bottom of the leaf is dark red what makes the plant even more picturesque.
Begonia Maculata Wightii is a relatively fast grower and makes an excellent indoor houseplant. It can grow up to 1,5m in height and produces gorgeous white, hanging flowers from late winter throughout spring.
Begonia Maculata Wightii likes bright, indirect sunlight, but it can also grow in lower light situations. If the polka dot begonia gets too much sun, the leaves can burn and dry out.
Begonia Maculata Wightii does not like to stay dry for too long, so water regularly and keep the soil to be somewhat moist. However, Begonias are highly susceptible to root rot, therefore you should always be careful to not overwater it. Also, when watering it, pour water directly onto the soil, ensuring the leaves remain dry.
Polka dot Begonias are part of the so-called cane begonias. Cane begonias have these a-symmetrical angel wing leaves growing on long bamboo-like stems. This variety is native to Brazil.
If you’re a Begonia fan, we also have the wonderful Begonia Tamaya in store.
Size
The plant is approximately 70cm tall and it comes in a 21cm plastic nursery pot.

Begonia Care Tips

Light
bright, indirect light, no direct sunlight
Water
keep the soil moist but not soggy wet
Temperatures
Most Begonia like it warm. Keep them in temperatures between 20 and 27 degrees Celsius.
Humidity
Most Begonia will do well in moderate humidity. However, especially the tropical species we sell might require very high humidity (75%+) to survive and thrive. If this is the case, it will be mentioned in the product description.
Soil
Keep your Begonia in moisture-retentive, but fast-draining soil. It should be slightly acidic – adding clay, loam or sand can help with that. Especially the more tropical Begonia like soil-less medium such as sphagnum moss.
Toxicity
Begonia are toxic to animals if ingested.
