Description

Amorphophallus Atroviridis is a staggering aroid with beautifully shaped, dark green leaves that have red leaf margins and undersides and are velvety to the touch. New emerging leaves are deep purple red, changing to dark green when mature. The stalks are of a reddish brown and often speckled. This rarely offered Amorphophallus is a must-have for every aroid enthusiast!

Amorphophallus Atroviridis is a tuberous plant that goes into dormancy during winter. Only water it very sparingly during this time in order to avoid rot on the tuber. With the right care, the plant will flower around June or July and produce an inflorescence with creamy-white spathe and long yellowish spadix.

Amorphophallus Atroviridis originates from the rocky cliffs in north central Thailand around the town of Sara Buri. In nature, this plant grows in crevices, among limestone boulders. For this reason, the tuber in this species grows deep and so it needs tall pots in cultivation. Amorphophallus Atroviridis is a smaller variety of amorphophallus that reaches between 30 and 60 cm in height.

Fun fact: The name Atroviridis is Latin for ‘dark green’, with ‘atro’ meaning ‘dark’ and viridis ‘green’.
